WIC will help you!

BREASTFEEDING AND WIC

Mothers who breast feed receive more benefits from the WIC Program.

Vouchers: You will receive food vouchers for purchasing nutritious foods for yourself until your baby is 1 year old. You will have to reapply after 6 months. At this visit, WIC personnel will check your baby's nutritional status (weight and hemoglobin levels), how your baby's eating is and your baby's overall health. This is an important visit and you can clarify any doubts that you have regarding breastfeeding, your health, and your babies health. Mothers who do not breast feed receive benefits for only 6 months.

If you breast feed exclusively, you are entitled to receive tuna and carrots, besides all the other healthy foods.

Free support from Nutritionists and Lactation Specialists:

Your local WIC Agency will provide you support in many different ways. You might receive an invitation to attend pre-natal classes on breastfeeding or to join support groups. You can call and ask questions that you might have.

There will be a Nutritionist, a Lactation Consultant, or peer counselors that will provide good information for you.

WIC Programs have exciting events such as meetings, breastfeeding parties, breastfeeding baby showers and other promotions.

Going back to work? Engorged? Baby in NICU? Need occasional pumping?

Your WIC Breastfeeding specialist will discuss with you and determine which breast pump is better designed for your case. Many WIC offices even provide an electric double breast pump to keep your milk supply in the event you become separated from your baby for a long period of time.

This professional will help your baby to latch on to your breast again after being used to other feeding methods. WIC offices can provide you a manual pump for occasional pumping, breast pads for leakage, or breast shells.

In any case, your WIC office will be there for you!
