WIC is a supplemental food Program that was designed to enhance the nutritional status of its participants (Women, Infants and Children).
One of the benefits of the WIC Program is Nutrition Education.
Sometimes you might wonder why WIC selects the foods it provides? The United States Department of Agriculture has strict regulations for WIC foods, that the states must follow. The WIC Program offers only the most nutritious, high quality foods for you to purchase. When you shop with WIC vouchers, you are assured that you will be bringing home quality foods, that were selected to help meet your nutritional needs. It is very important that you understand about the nutrients that WIC foods bring into your family's health. Quantity and quality offered by the WIC Program may vary in different States. This course is intended to explain briefly and to give an overview of WIC foods. However this is not a commitment. Consult your local WIC office for more detailed information. 1.) Exclusively breastfed babies are receiving the best nutrition for their growing bodies. This is because mother's milk is nutritionally complete and perfect for babies up to 6 months of age. No other supplements or water are necessary if the mother nurses "on demand". At 6 months of age other foods should be added into the exclusively breastfed baby's diet. The exclusively breastfeeding mother and infant receive extra foods. See "Women" topic in this study. 2.) Partially breastfed babies: These infants will receive the amount of formula necessary to supplement breastmilk. At 6 months of age, your infant will receive infant cereal 3.) Formula fed babies: will receive the formula that is called "contract formula" which varies among States. If the infant develops an intolerance to any formula or has a nutritional related medical condition, WIC can provide "special non-contract formulas". In this case, the parents or caregivers will need to bring a written medical request. See your local WIC offices for details. Remember: WIC is a supplemental Program. You may have to purchase formula as your baby grows. At 6 months your infant will receive infant cereal. 4.) After your baby's 5th month of life you will receive "fruits, vegetables, and dry infant cereal". Exclusively breastfed infants receive more fruits, vegetables, and baby meats. Infant cereal (and meats for exclusively breastfed infants) will provide the IRON needed for your baby's brain development. 5.) Cereal will boost the FIBER and IRON in your baby’s diet. FIBER is needed to help with bowel movements. IRON is needed for the fast brain growth that occurs during this time. The fruit will provide the VITAMIN C that is important to keep blood vessels, gums and skin healthy. This vitamin also enhances the baby's delicate immune system, which needs to be strong to fight infections.
