Your WIC Foods - Children 1 to 2 years of age,
Toddlers and Preschoolers
During this period of time your baby will have changing
nutritional needs. As the general growth of a child slows after the
first birthday, your toddler will need nutritious foods to develop strong
bones and healthy tissues.

|

Cereal will be provided on your child's vouchers to improve the calories
(= energy) in your child's diet. Cereal is also important because it contains
iron which helps with brain development and improves nutrients in your
child's blood. Iron fights anemia and makes your child's blood strong.
Cereal is rich in fiber, which makes the digestive system work regularly. |

Milk and cheese will provide high quality protein, which is necessary
for your child's growth and development. Calcium and Phosphorous in
all dairy products are highly absorbed and are necessary for the growth
and maintenance of bones and teeth. Any milk provided by WIC is enriched
with Vitamin D. This important Vitamin enhances the action of Calcium
and Phosphorous, preventing rickets (rickets is a severe disease caused
by the lack of Vitamin D & Calcium that causes the bones to be soft
and can be easily broken and can cause bone mal-formation for life).

100% fruit juice will provide extra calories, good amounts of Vitamin
C and in many cases, Vitamin A as well. Both vitamins are necessary
for the healthy development of all tissues in your child's body. These
vitamins are very important for the repair and maintenance of the membranes
such as skin, mouth, upper respiratory and digestive tracts. Vitamin
A works together with Calcium and Phosphorous in bone and teeth development.
Vitamin A helps skin and mucosas to be strong to avoid bacterial infections.
Vitamin A is crucial for the eyesight and the work of the retina.
Vitamin C boosts the immune system to help a growing child use all his
or her energy to grow, instead of fighting infections.

Eggs
will provide an extra amount of high quality protein to improve your child's
growth and blood formation. It helps create fighting agents called antibodies
that are very important and act as a defense against infections. Eggs
are also rich in iron. |
CHILDREN 2 to 5 YEARS OF AGE
(preschoolers)

 During
this time, your child will grow fast and develop gross and fine motor
skills. The nutrients provided from foods are important during this
process, because they help your child's brain and body grow and function
well.
Your child's diet must provide all of the nutrients that
are essential for your child's full development. A variety of foods
are necessary to achieve this goal.
After
2 years of age, there will be differences in the amount of food your
child will receive from WIC due to the increased calorie requirement
for this age group. In general, your child needs to receive more quantities
of the foods that he/she received during the first year of life.
One particular food that will be introduced to your child's
diet is a choice of peanut butter or dried
beans. These foods were selected because they are a rich
source of iron and protein. Peanut
butter also provides important amounts of good quality fat and beans
provide an extra amount of fiber. Peanut butter is not given in the
first year of life because some children are not ready for sticky
foods that might be hard to chew and swallow.
* Toddlers between 1 to 2 years should be fed
whole milk.
* Make sure you include at least 5 servings a day of fresh fruits
and veggies.
* A toddler can be breastfed while it is desired by both the mother
and the child
* Preschoolers can be fed 2% or 1% skim milk.
* An older child still can be breastfed for as long as the mom and
the child mutually desire breastfeeding.
