PREGNANT WOMEN
This is a very special moment in a woman's life. It is very important to take care of yourself and to eat healthy foods. When you participate in the WIC Program, you will learn a lot about nutrition, breastfeeding, and how to eat a balanced diet to help your baby to grow well. During pregnancy every woman should eat an extra amount of calories to keep up with her baby's fast growth. WIC will provide a supplemental package of foods that will help your body to use nutritious foods.
CEREAL: it is given to you because you need extra calories. Cereal provides many good nutrients including iron. This nutrient is important because it will help your body to fight anemia. Iron will help to carry oxygen to your baby's body and will help you to not feel tired. Cereal from WIC will provide many vitamins, including Folic Acid, which helps to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida early in pregnancy. Many cereals are very good sources of Calcium that helps you and your baby develop strong bones and teeth. Cereal is also rich in fiber, which helps with constipation, which is common in pregnancy.
MILK and CHEESE: Dairy products are excellent sources of Calcium, Phosphorous and Vitamin D. Pregnancy requires extra amounts of these 3 nutrients for the bone formation in the baby, to keep a mother's bones and teeth strong, and to regulate many hormones that are produced during pregnancy. Calcium also helps to prevent high blood pressure, which is a very common event during pregnancy (called Hypertension Induced by Pregnancy). This food group provides high quality protein that work as "body builders", building and repairing all parts of our bodies. Protein makes a pregnant woman’s blood strong and helps her immune system to fight infections.
JUICES: WIC juices are 100 % fruit juice, so you can rest assured that you won't be drinking sugar water. Juices can be helpful when you try to boost the amount of Vitamin C in your diet. This Vitamin helps your immune system, which is very sensitive during pregnancy. Vitamin C plays an important part in the maintenance of our body tissues. Do not forget to eat about 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. EGGS: Eggs provide high quality protein and iron, as well as an amount of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is very important to build baby's eye complex and to keep the mother's vision working well.

Beans are delicious and versatile. They give lots of fiber to help with your digestive system. Peanut butter also provides good quality fats that are important during pregnancy.
A mother who is breastfeeding will receive these foods: CEREAL, MILK, CHEESE, EGGS, JUICE, BEANS/PEANUT BUTTER.
If a mother is exclusively breastfeeding, she will receive all the foods listed above plus CANNED TUNA FISH and CARROTS, more juice and more milk than any other woman in the program. Canned tuna is rich in High Quality Protein, which will help the mother's own reserves to be replenished. Tuna is very rich in important kind of fats that passes to her milk and helps with your baby's eye and brain development. Cereal is a nutritious food that provides energy to help with the extra requirement of calories needed to produce breast milk: a woman will spend 1000 extra calories a day to produce mature breast milk. Cereal is a good source of fiber that helps with your regularity. Cereal is also enriched with iron and folic acid that are needed to replace the blood loss after pregnancy and delivery.
